Guest Post : Review of the Sena 20S

This is a guest post by Miles By Motorcycle member, Lisa Hallwhich was originally posted to theforum here. In Lisa's own words, "I'm a passionate motorcyclist. If I'm not riding I'm reading about riding. I've been riding for over 21 years and have logged over 275,000 miles. I'm getting close to 300,00. My husband and I began riding at the same time and we have loved each and every mile. We've been involved with group riding since 96 and have led thousands of rides and trips. I do all of the r ...Read More

Event Report: Cannon Ball Centennial Ride, One Riders Story Presentation

On July 26, I was invited to give a talk at Bobs BMW Motorcycles in Jessup, Md about my time on the Cannon Ball Centennial Ride which I took part in from Dodge City, Kansas to Battery Park, New York, New York. A long time family friend, Dr. Garret Hyde, offered to record it. I feel terribly self conscious about this. Now, gritting my teeth with trepidation, I am making the videos of the presentation available. It's a one hour presentation divided into 5 parts. I worked on the pres ...Read More

Google Android SDK Emulator problems under Ubuntu Linux 14.04

The plan, once I finish up the Twitter Bootstrap conversion of the site, is to build a mobile app. I'm on the fence as to whether I want to try Appcelerator Titanium to re-use at least some portion of the code between platforms or whether I just want to go Native and target Android exclusively first. (I know, I know, you're supposed to bite the bullet, deal with Objective-C and target the iPhone first.) Regardless, I need to get the Google SDK installed and the emulator working which proved t ...Read More

HHVM 3.2.0 File Not Found issue

The fine folks building HHVM released version 3.2.0 which I installed on my development box to try out only to find that suddenly I was getting nothing but 404's. I downgraded to 3.1.0 and once again everything worked. It took some crawling through the FastCGI code to realize that in 3.2.0 SCRIPT_FILENAME was wrong. Checking through the changes to the FastCGI code on github I came across this commit: https://github.com/facebook/hhvm/commit/80638d7e97db40753f7b374010dd78716c717e87 It ...Read More

2014 New Mexico Trip : Being Open on the Road : Joining Finding Cannonball's Trail Centennial Ride

There are many ways to travel. Most people like to book reservations and know exactly where they are going to end up when. For me that feels too much like day to day life. I learned a long time ago when I was in a very different place, that being flexible and open on the road can unlock doors that from the start you would not have imagined possible. I've tried to share this view, but in practice it's harder than in theory. I had parted company with John and Lucy and headed out from Cano ...Read More

2014 New Mexico Trip : Guest Post : On the Subject of Passengering

This is a guest post by my traveling companion, John St John, that he originallly posted to Facebook and that I am sharing here with permission. Yesterday, Yermo gave Lucy a day-long course in "passengering". His methodical approach, taking nothing for granted, was also instructional to me. As a rider who grew up on a motorcycle, as both pilot and passenger from the age of 8 or 9, there is much that I take for granted. Such as: when the bike leans, the passenger leans with it. I could neve ...Read More

2014 New Mexico Trip: The Unexpected

As I've mentioned so many times in the past, I'm ill. It's one of the reasons that my bike has so little mileage on it despite me having owned it for so long. There were a number of years where it simply hurt too much to ride. At some point, I discovered that I could manage my condition by modifying my diet. Everything(tm) changed after that. In this modern prepackaged world, it's a fairly difficult diet to follow but I manage and have been doing much better for the last many years. However, ...Read More

2014 New Mexico Trip: Dust Storms in Texas and Route 191 from Clifton to Eager, AZ

I woke unusually early, 6:30 AM which might as well be no-man's time, and spent the extra hours writing while listening to yet another wind storm making a ruckus outside. Even after a few hours, the ruckus didn't die down. Venturing out into the light, I noticed the sky was an unusual orange brown color. "Smog?" I wondered but thought that I was too far from any major cities for that to be the case. Sand and silt could be seen blowing along the pavement in the 20mph or so winds. Looking at my b ...Read More

2014 New Mexico Trip : Carlsbad Caverns

Just start. Don't worry where it ends up, even if you risk it ending up someplace that you're not going to like, like Texas. What is true for traveling by motorcycle is also true of writing. When I travel with others, regadless of who it is, I never seem to take the time to gather my thoughts and compose them into words. It somehow seems rude to take so many hours away from close friends that mean the world to you when you see them so rarely. There have been many moments over the last couple ...Read More

2014 New Mexico Trip : A First Ever Off on Them Thar Curvey Roads

Some too many days ago in a state far far away called Virginia ... "Do you like them thar curvey roads?" the man behind the counter asked in a thick southern accent. "Why yes, Sir. We certainly do." I replied wondering what kind of local roads we were about to discover. "If you take a right down in Tazewell onto Route 16 it goes over three mountains and is real curvey and pretty. I think they call it that thar 'Back of the Dragon'." We would have ridden right past it had he not mentione ...Read More

New Mexico - Days 1 & 2 - Shirking all Responsibilities

I am remiss. Too tired to write, I've opted to do something insufficient rather than do nothing at all. The last two days of slow twisty Virginia and West Virginia roads have simply been fantastic. Unfortunately, my GPS has failed so I have no tracks to share. I joked with my traveling companion, John St John who rode down from New Hampshire to join me on the trip across, that we should just spend the new few weeks exploring West Virginia. The roads here are that good. Roads of note: Smoke Ho ...Read More

Guest Post: A Rolling Meditation

This is a guest post by Robert Argento. On most Tuesday nights, I meet Robert over a glass of wine and we talk about subjects ranging from economics to philosophy and many topics in between. Often these conversations get related to motorcycling. This is his first post on M-BY-M. For more of Robert's writing see his own blog Marginal Returns to Zen. Most people tend to think of karma as what goes around comes around. Basically, you have a cosmic ledger of deeds good and bad that decid ...Read More

Event Report: Part II of Colin Busch's Ushuaia Motorcycle Trip Presentation

Colin Busch is a dangerous man. His words, imbued with a relentless optimism and bounding energy, somehow wend their way deep into your subconscious past your best defenses, the hell hounds named "I can't", "I shouldn't" and "What If", to enter that space where old dreams long forgotten slumber undisturbed under layers of dust. "Just go. It's easier than you think." he says infectiously. A few years ago, Colin got his passport, international drivers license and some innoculations and with ...Read More

Stacking Bootstrap Dialogs using Event Callbacks

The current site with it's ugly markup and abysmal CSS has outlived it's usefulness. More and more people are trying, unsuccessfully, to use the site from mobile devices. So, before I embark on adding any new features, I've decided it's time to move the site over to something that will work equally well on mobile devices as on desktop PCs. "Dammit, Jim, I'm a programmer, not a designer." I started looking at a few so called Responsive CSS Frameworks. I chose Twitter Bootstrap v.3.1 becaus ...Read More

Corporate Bloggers and a Question of Integrity

I get a ridiculous number of "corporate" guest blog requests. What these guys do, under contract with some vendor they never seem to want to disclose, is write generic motorcycle content. The catch is they want to include a link to said vendor despite the fact the vendor is so rarely in any way related to the content of the article. "Writes article about great roads in Europe then ends the article with a blurb about some dealership in Kansas." It's a ploy to increase link popularity and search ...Read More

Lunch at RevZilla or M-BY-MC is Now an Affiliate!

Over the summer I had written a road report about my last trip to Deal's Gap. In that report, I described a few things I had figured out about how to convey the feel of cornering to someone else. Chris at RevZilla noticed the article and put a link to it on the RevZilla Facebook page with a complimentary introduction. This was a very unexpected surprise. That one act caused 100 new people to like the M-BY-MC Facebook page, our best day up to that point. From this and a bit of reading, I gained a ...Read More

problems with range.setStartBefore()

Chrome and FireFox behave very differently in terms of what happens when you attempt to select the position before a DIV usingrange.setStartBefore() when the DIV is preceded by a textnode. Consider the HTML: <div contenteditable="true" id="edit">foo<div id="test">bar</div></div> I want to select the end of the textnode foo.. You use a range to accomplish this as in: // for FireFox make sure the editable div is focused so we can see the cursordocument.getElementBy ...Read More

A summary of markup changes in contenteditable divs in WebKit,FireFox and MSIE

This is a technical article covering how browsers muck up the underlying markup in an editable area as a user edits content. It turns out the problems center around opening up new lines using the ENTER key and merging them back together again using the BACKSPACE or DELETE keys. If you dont go look you just wont know. When you attempt to create an editor in a contenteditable div, the browser is in control and youre just along for the ride. Each browser has different ideas of what should ...Read More

You can t select that webkit browser selections and ranges in Chrome and Safari

This is a technical article. I am building a jQuery plugin to as areplacement for the venerable HTML TEXTAREA tag so I can do some fanciness. In my textarea plugin I want to be able to insert blocks of HTML into a contenteditable DIV that should be treated as single objects. These can be wrapped in a SPAN or a DIV. One of my requirements is that, I should be able to move the cursor over them. If Im to the left of the object and press the right arrow key, the cursor should jump to the end of ...Read More

The rich_textarea jQuery plugin a relatively non-technical description.

As Ive been bemoaning onFacebook and Twitter for the last few weeks, after spending quite a bit of time looking far and wide for an adequate pre-existing solution and finding none, I have decided to roll up my sleeves, get my hands dirty, and build a replacement for the venerable TEXTAREA input box. This has turned out to be such a vastly more difficult and annoying task than I could have imagined. As has always been the case with relatively low level browser based development, it has been a f ...Read More

The Horrors of Cursor Positioning in contenteditable div s

Sorry, this is a bit of technical minutia having to do with using Javascript in modern browser to manipulate content on the fly. Its a bit technical but I do discuss the purpose behind it in terms of M-BY-MC and what youll be able to do on the site. If youd like a taste of the horror that is browser based development, read on Its always something. Apparently, you cannot position the cursor into the empty space between two block level tags. Why Software Patents are a Terrible Idea -or- Why you shouldn t be allowed to patent a better virtual mouse trap.

(This is a re-post of an article I wrote last year. I used this analogy to explain to non-technical people why software patents are such a terrible idea.)? Having mice in your kitchen sucks. They eat your apples. They spread disease. They freak out your girlfriend. She becomes unhappy and refuses to cook. You face another lonely night eating ramen noodles. So, because you are highly motivated by having a happy girlfriend and being fed a real dinner, in a moment of genius clarity, you design ...Read More
