First Day Out 11/16/22 Wed

The morning came gray damp and cold. We were up early enough and got our act together and before long we’re raising anchor and starting the motor out of the harbor. Tabasco fell and behind us and we made our way down the river towards the Chesapeake.   The morning came gray damp and cold. At anchor- The night before-

Today turned out to be a bit busier than expected. We met up with the crew from Tabasco this morning and both captains headed off to customs as we need the declarations to show that we left the United States when we arrive in Saint Martin. That took quite a bit of time to do and in the meantime while we took care of finishing outfitting the boat.   Today turned out to be a bit busier than expected. A day of Waiting

All dressed up, and no place to go. Today is a day of waiting. Waiting for the weather window to improve so that we may depart on our journey. Crew is arriving

It is Monday night and I am sitting in the fish and slip restaurant at the marina waiting for your Mo and the rest of Tabasco‘s crew to arrive. They’ve made the sale down from the marina north to the Chesapeake and now have arrived at Norfolk. Your mom is coming in the dinghy with a first stop at the boat to transfer his gear. Captain Dana is coordinating this while I hold a table at the restaurant.       It seems like such a long wait but your mama is finally here. It’s be ...Read More

Monday, 11-14-22

The sun came up in a huge orange blaze this morning fighting through the low clouds off to the eastern horizon. Hidden by the buildings and other boats it did not make for a good photograph but it was a nice start to the day. It became colder overnight and we’ve had the heat on in the boat which has been a pleasant change. It’s in the 40s this morning and will probably only get up to around 50° today. The skies are still a little cloudy and some more blustery weather is expected to move in ...Read More

Jackie and I arrived around 5 PM Saturday evening. It was getting dark but we quickly found our way to the boat. Captain Dana arrived about an hour later. It was a warm calm night and we enjoyed dinner at a restaurant within walking distance.   Jackie and I arrived around 5 PM Saturday evening. Jackie's Birthday Ride - Friday

It rained a little bit overnight and things were wet this morning and a little cooler. Still the skies did not look too bad and we found our breakfast around the corner at the little coffee shop in Tazewell. After breakfast we parted ways with Yermo and Jackie and I headed south.   Tazewell, VA(https://adv-traveler.com/13640/rides/268932/jackie-s-birthday-ride-/photos/269353/tazewell--va)   The ride out from Tazewell on VA 91 is familiar all the way to Hayters Gap, we use it of ...Read More

Jackie's Birthday Ride - Thursday

We ate breakfast at the lodge then said goodbye to our friends as they headed home. Jackie, Yermo, and I hit the road. We started with Westminster Road again then cruised west on US 39 to Marlinton, WV. Jackie's Birthday Ride - Wednesday

The morning started cool with a light cloud cover. We enjoyed our complimentary and delicious breakfast at the lodge which is served a bit late for my eager time schedule. Breakfast and dinner are included when staying at the Ft. Lewis Lodge which is really convenient due to its isolated location. It meant a kind of late start to the day, but worth it.   (https://adv-traveler.com/13640/rides/268932/jackie-s-birthday-ride-/photos/269156/untitled)   From Fort Lewis we headed south ...Read More

COBDR 2022 - Summary

The Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route is one of the more difficult BDR's but is also stunningly beautiful. The challenges are the rocky terrain, steep slopes, altitude, and variable weather.   (https://adv-traveler.com/13640/rides/268081/colorado-bdr-2022/photos/268867/untitled)   Guides work much harder than you think. One of the illusions is to keep the clients from seeing (and trying to get involved with) all the behind the scenes maintenance, planning, and strategies t ...Read More

COBDR 2022 - July 22 - Ouray to Denver

We started early today on the ride back to Denver from Ouray. It's more than 300 miles. The first hitch in the travels was in Ouray when the breakfast spot we had chosen did not open on time. Rather than wait, we hit the road to make the best use of the time. We found breakfast in Montrose at a Starvin Marvin restaurant.   (https://adv-traveler.com/13640/rides/268081/colorado-bdr-2022/photos/268654/untitled)   From there we headed east through Gunnison and the beautiful Black Ca ...Read More

COBDR 2022 - July 21 - Telluride to Ouray

Leaving Telluride this morning it wasn't long until we got on a fairly nice graded gravel road. It wound up into the forest and was very pleasant, peaceful riding. This led to another forest road which was a little more than I expected. It was not extreme like we've been used to, but still a bit rocky and bumpier.   (https://adv-traveler.com/13640/rides/268081/colorado-bdr-2022/photos/268618/untitled) (https://adv-traveler.com/13640/rides/268081/colorado-bdr-2022/photos/268620/unti ...Read More

COBDR 2022 - July 20 - Lake City to Telluride

With the town still overrun with tourists our van driver Ben and lead guide Ash went into town to fetch coffee and survey the situation. Worried the only bakery would run out of food they brought back breakfast sandwiches for everyone and we ate at the cabins. Still, with the big day looming, the group went into town for more coffee to be energized for the challenge ahead.    (https://adv-traveler.com/13640/rides/268081/colorado-bdr-2022/photos/268551/untitled)   The trek acros ...Read More

COBDR 2022 - July 19 - Buena Vista to Lake City

It was a cool morning when we loaded up from the motel and headed into town to eat at a local diner. Afterwards, we went to the bike rental to get a replacement for the GS that was wrecked yesterday. With a fresh new KTM 890 we headed out for Cottonwood Pass.   (https://adv-traveler.com/13640/rides/268081/colorado-bdr-2022/photos/268510/untitled) (https://adv-traveler.com/13640/rides/268081/colorado-bdr-2022/photos/268511/untitled) (https://adv-traveler.com/13640/rides/268081/ ...Read More

COBDR 2022 - July 18 - Eagle to Buena Vista

Today was the first day of true adventure riding. Leaving Eagle this morning, it wasn't long on the paved roads before we got off onto the dirt. While it started out easy it soon got a bit more technical and rough. It was the first these guys had been on some truly rocky stuff, and that was just the beginning.   (https://adv-traveler.com/13640/rides/268081/colorado-bdr-2022/photos/268460/untitled)   The trail soon got steeper and rougher and we climbed up over a small pass th ...Read More

COBDR 2022 - July 16 - Denver to Steamboat Springs

The first day is done, and it was a good one. There's quite a bit of highway to get out of Denver proper and then up into the beginning of the mountains. There's really no way around it, you just have to put in the miles. But as soon as we could, we turned off  the pavement to get on the first of many dirt roads to come.   (https://adv-traveler.com/13640/rides/268081/colorado-bdr-2022/photos/268379/untitled)   The first of these roads was fairly simple, a good chance for eve ...Read More

COBDR 2022 - July 15 - Getting Ready

We went to the shop in the morning to get my bike fitted out. I'm riding Scott Lee's (Owner, Colorado Motorcycle Adventures) personal KTM 890R which is completely tricked out with heavier suspension, valving, and all the bells and whistles. Ash (Lead guide & my brother-in-law)  threw on a new rear tire and we attempted to adjust some of the modifications Scott had made to the bike. Scott is nearly 6 ft 5 in, quite a bit larger than me at 5'10, and probably 100 lbs heavier.  We had hop ...Read More

COBDR 2022 - July 14 - Arrived Denver

I'm checked into the Cambria Hotel in Denver and pretty much settled in. While it's an "airport hotel", there's really nothing close to the Denver airport. The hotel is 20 minutes away in Aurora. There were a few delays due to weather, and we had to circle the Denver airport for 20 minutes or so for storms to clear before we could land, but overall the travel went well and the flights really are not that long.   (https://adv-traveler.com/13640/rides/268081/colorado-bdr-2022/photos/26835 ...Read More
